I’ve talked about anger a lot in this podcast — how important it is to feel it and express it, then let go. Keeping the anger in can cause our chronic symptoms to stick around, and we don’t want that.
And what we also don’t want is to create more anger and keep perpetuating it.
This can easily happen in simple everyday situations. For example, someone cuts you off in traffic. Yes, it can be very irritating. You may feel a wave of anger and heat in the body, you may let out a few not-so-nice words. That’s all normal. But what’s not good is to keep talking about this incident with everyone and anyone who wants to listen. Because that way, you stir up the same situation and same emotions again, stay stuck in them, and potentially create more physical symptoms.
Another example is politics. This is a very big topic at the moment and, well, most of the time. You may not agree with what’s happening in politics, and that’s okay. You may feel angry and triggered. But does it help to talk about it all the time, put up angry posts about politics, and discuss these things with all your friends and family members? Notice how it makes you feel inside.
Lastly, gossiping and judging… They are also filled with anger! For example, you may not like someone one social media, so you may send posts and videos about her back and forth with your friend, gossiping and judging…. But how does it truly make you feel? Does it bring you healing, lightness, ease, gratitude?
This post alone may make you angry…
My suggestion today is NOT to reject anger and it's NOT to avoid it. It is to stop perpetuating this anger; stop creating more of it. It does not serve you.
If you feel anger, then truly feel it, allow it, do some somatic practices, let it out — and then move on to a different state. This state should be positive, more uplifted, more hopeful, grateful. Think about something GOOD and notice how that makes you feel, vs thinking and talking about things that make you angry.
