Do you remember how you were feeling just before your most major chronic pain or other chronic symptom started?
My guess is that there was already something going on before the biggest symptom hit…
– Maybe you noticed that you were feeling overwhelmed even by the simplest tasks that never used to be a problem for you before
– Maybe your hands were shaking often when typing or making food
– Maybe you were tossing and turning at night, unable to stop your mind
– Maybe you noticed that your heart was racing faster and stronger sometimes, even when you weren’t doing anything physically intense.
You had anxiety, but you may or may not have been aware of it. I wasn’t aware of this — I knew I had these symptoms but I never knew that this was anxiety!
And then something bigger happened that then became a real problem for you.
Maybe your back, foot or hip started hurting, or you were hit with massive fatigue. It may have happened suddenly or come on more gradually, but the fact is that THIS new symptom was much bigger and impacted your life much more than those racing thoughts or some restless nights.
One thing that really helped me to understand why I got 7 years of chronic back pain (and that realization came to me only about a year ago!) was this:
This back pain wasn’t a new, separate problem, something that I had to treat in a very specific way. This back pain was just an extension of my anxiety; you could say that this was my anxiety taken to the next level.
Realizing that this main chronic symptom was just another way how anxiety expressed itself, helped me to also resolve it easier. I started thinking what can I do to address my anxiety, not how can I get rid of back pain.
There was no need for specific back treatments, exercises, stretching routines, mobility drills. Because if the root cause of the chronic pain was anxiety, then I had to work on that root cause. And stretching, strengthening and mobility drills, let alone injections and surgeries, simply can’t “fix” anxiety.
