In this episode of the Balanced Vibes podcast, I am joined by two amazing health coaches — Deanna and Tony Schober.
Their goal is to teach their clients what it means and what it takes to have an ideal body. Their approach might surprise you, because having an ideal body doesn't start with “fixing” your physical body. Ideal body is the side effect, or a result of, self care, proper nutrition, right movement, and enjoying your life outside of food and fitness too.

How To Have an Ideal Body – Interview with Deanna and Tony Schober
Today I’m joined by two amazing health coaches, Deanna and Tony Schober. I’m really excited to share with you their really balanced approach to health and fitness. It’s been a journey for them to get there, but this journey is the exact reason why they understand their clients struggles so well, and can help them in a way that truly transforms people’s lifestyles.
Get To Know Deanna and Tony
Tony calls himself an Ideal Body coach. For him, ideal body is a side effect of healthy mindset. In his opinion, body change is an outcome of taking care of your body. That’s why it’s so important to take an inside out approach to health and fitness, not the other way around.
Deanna works mostly with moms. Her specialty is helping moms heal their relationship with their bodies and help them improve their self worth. She believes that if our relationship with ourselves in place, then the physical results fall into place as well.
Fitness and Sushi Podcast
Deanna and Toni have a podcast together, called Fitness and Sushi.
Deanna and Tony have been going on weekly date nights for 6 years. On these date nights, they’ve always had deep conversations about food, health and body image. One day they realized that it would be great if others could hear these conversations too — and the Fitness and Sushi podcast was born.
Personal Struggles With Food and Fitness
Tony had a personal struggle with food and fitness but he didn’t really understand it at the time.
He had started training when he was 12 years old. After graduating from high school, he got into bodybuilding. His diet was always really strict, low carb, with some cheat meals. This extremely rigid lifestyle ended up creating him a bad binge eating disorder. On binge days, he would occasionally eat 7000 calories a days, then eat “clean” for 8 weeks. During a month when he was bingeing, he would gain up to 30 lbs.
This binge-restrict cycle lasted for about 10 years. Then Tony switched to IIFYM approach, which allowed him to eat more different foods. The binges started to slowly decrease. Learning about moderation changed everything for him. And today, the binges are completely gone.
Deanna remembers going over to Tony’s house when they first started dating, and seeing all the super “clean” foods there. She got into the similar lifestyle too and as a result, got leaner and leaner. But food took over her life and became all she could think about. She was still feeling unworthy and insecure about her body. In weekends, Deanna and Tony were having huge binges, and then started eating “clean” again on Monday.
Intuitive Eating — An Eye Opening Change of Direction
One day Tony brought home the “Intuitive Eating” book.
When Deanna first read this, she got upset. How can dieticians say that it’s okay to eat processed foods? Until then, their eating had been really “clean” and they made their kids eat super clean too. But they decided to try this out — more on that in a bit.
“Overcoming Binge Eating” was another book that Tony read and that opened his eyes: The solution to his eating issues was actually to stop eating so perfectly, and start eating the fear foods.
He went all in with this idea: He went to the store without any grocery list, without planning his calories and macros… He was just going to go and get what he wanted. He realized how restrictive he had been and how much emotion trauma he had caused himself.
So, the day he decided to try this out, he went to the store and bought pancakes, pizza and all the foods that had been off limits for him… This phase where he really wanted to eat everything lasted for a week. He soon realized that that he wants to eat whole foods because these foods made him feel much better.
Deanna says that at first, she didn’t get how this way of eating was any different from binge eating. But she soon realised that making the choice to eat this way, is so much more different from having a bingeing event which was something to hide and be ashamed of.
The food stopped having the same intensity and power. This was a big dial mover for both of them.
Are Trigger Foods Actually Trigger Foods?
Now, their food problems are completely solved, and they help their clients find the same kind of freedom. Many of Deanna’s and Tony’s clients experience similar binge-restrict cycles, for example eating very clean during the week, and then “letting go” during the weekend. They teach their clients that the ultimate goal is to eat similarly on Wednesday as you do on Saturday.
Deanna makes sure her clients go through a time period where they can literally eat what they want. That way, the intensity of food comes down. They eat what they want without guilt. Some people may gain weight but that has to be okay. It’s almost a rule that once they try these things, they soon start craving better things.
Most people are terrified of trigger foods. Tony says that sometimes those trigger foods aren’t even trigger foods. It’s all about mindset. When we practice abundance around food, these foods stop being trigger foods.
Deanna and Tony say that she can feel it a mile away when someone is still really obsessed with food. They both help people to have a better relationship with food before they even consider weight loss. People already know that and come to them because they know their approach — they may want to lose weight but they already know that if their mindset is not healthy at first, that has to be taken care of first.
Deanna and Tony believe that calorie and macro tracking can be good tools but they are not to be used forever. Some clients may start out with tracking, but the ultimate goal is to also learn to trust themselves, stop weighing themselves every day and stop tracking every calorie. A lot of people are tired of worrying about their weight. When they truly listen to their bodies, they often get the outcomes they were after.
