362. Are You Struggling to Sleep at Night?

November 13, 2024 by Kersten Kimura Leave a Comment

Are you struggling to get good sleep at night? And on top of that, you also have chronic symptoms in the body, like pain and tension even when you know that you haven’t hurt yourself?

While it’s common attribute sleepless nights to stress or lifestyle choices, the underlying issue often lies within the nervous system. When your nervous system is hyper-activated, it can lead to a cycle of sleeplessness that becomes difficult to break.

If you are dealing with insomnia, the cause is likely that your sympathetic system, also known as the fight or flight system, is often in overdrive, keeping you alert and anxious even when you really want and need to sleep.

Chronic hyper-activation can stem from various factors, including stress, anxiety, and lifestyle habits. Being hyper activated during the day makes it challenging to transition into a restful state at night, and that’s why you can’t sleep.

To combat insomnia linked to a hyper-activated nervous system, it is essential to take a look at how you are spending your days. Are you always “on”, checking your phone a hundred times a day, overstressed with work, worrying too much about things you can’t change, adding things to your to-do list that actually don’t need to be there? Are you creating yourself more stress than what you can handle?

And here’s a biggie… Do you start your day by scrolling your phone which is already next to your bed — because the last thing you did before closing your eyes at night was to check your phone?

By understanding the connection between a hyper-activated nervous system and insomnia and doing things that take you out of that constantly elevated sympathetic state during the day, you will also start sleeping better at night.
