Do you feel like you have to control everything? That you can't be at peace if you don't know exactly every next step?
If so, today's post is for you…
The current situation in the world, as we're going through the Coronavirus, is hard. But it's also a good learning time. We can control certain parts of our lives but we can't control everything. And that is a tough thing to handle; especially if we identify as a perfectionist and a little bit of control freak.
How My Client Trusted the Process of Recovery
The other day I talked to a client who has been working with me over 6 months now. When we first started working together, her goal was to get her period back. She wanted to know exactly
1️⃣How much weight she'll have to gain to recover from Hypothalamic Amenorrhea
2️⃣How much food is “right” to eat and if X is “too much” in Hypothalamic Amenorrhea
3️⃣How long going to take to recover from Hypothalamic Amenorrhea
4️⃣Can she really, really get her period back.
I wasn't able to answer exactly the first 3. Only your body knows what the right weight is but the 4th one I knew: YES, absolutely.
My client recovered in 2 months and 3 weeks because even though she wanted to know every detail, she still trusted her coach and the process.
Not Everything Is Always Under Our Control
Couple of days ago we were talking again. She said that Hypothalamic Amenorrhea recovery was a mini training for what's happening right now when the Coronavirus is spreading so fast. She is stuck in one country while her husband is in the other country — in Italy, where the coronavirus outbreak is extra bad. Her job and her sister are yet in another country.
At first she wanted to control everything about this situation. She would blame her husband for flying to Italy when he could have stayed (that was before things got as bad as they're now). She looked for every option how they must make it possible for her or him to fly. “Because what do you mean we can't fly?” she said.
Talk about uncertainty and lack of control!
Trust the Process and that Everything Will Be Alright
Yes, what's happening in the world is hard but now is the best time to practice trust.
When it comes to eating disorder or Hypothalamic Amenorrhea recovery, we can control our effort — our mindset work and our eating and resting. Then, we have to let go and trust.
Same thing with the virus. Let's do our part: wash our hands and stay home, but then trust and let go of the excessive worrying. It doesn't help to watch every news and create more panic and try to control things eve more — because we can't control every detail about the virus.
Can You Let Go Of The Need to Control Your Food and Fitness?
Can you let go of the need to
…go to the gym now, when we should stay home to protect ourselves and others from the Coronavirus?
…control your macros to the detail?
…force your body to a size that's not right for you?
…check the news every minute only to get even more scared?
Trust Instead of Controlling
Many of my clients have achieved their goals not by pushing more and fighting harder, but by doing the work they have to do and then letting go. And this is what works the best.
Can you let go of the need to control everything, and trust that things will work out?
