Healthy Mindset

Stop Suppressing Your Needs, Start Listening to Your Intuition

Suppressing our thoughts and feelings is one of the worst things we can do for our short and long-term health. We're moving farther and farther away from our intuition and real needs.

Quite honestly, I've only recently realized how much I really used to suppress my thoughts, feelings and needs – my intuition – in the past! Part of this realisation came when I did Ayahuasca in June (you can watch videos about it here, here and here) in Costa Rica.

A lot of times we don't even realize how much we suppress our thoughts and feelings instead of listening to them and letting them to guide us towards the right decisions.

How We Constantly Ignore Ourselves…

Unfortunately, the diet and fitness industry is here to happily make us suppress our intuition even more, telling us to eat less and exercise more, and even ignore the signs of overdoing it. Food and fitness are some examples, but of course, there are many more. A few typical examples of how we don't listen to ourselves:

  • We go to school to study a certain thing because that's what is expected from us or that's what is going to make us a lot money. We forget to care about what we really want.
  • We work out a certain way because that burns most calories/someone else works out this way/ we've been told that's the way to do it.
  • We eat a certain way because this food has the least calories/ least carbs/ the “plan” says so/ doing X “tricks” our bodies into thinking it's full.

Do You Listen to Yourself?

Here's the truth though… Suppressing emotions, thoughts and and needs year after year simply can't make us healthier and happier. A perfect example of this are all those people who lose weight but don't feel happier as a result, although they thought they would!

Also, do you know that person who seemingly has all her ducks in a row – everything is organized, done according to the plan, perfect, under control? We all know that person. But this person is often the person one suppresses her emotions and her true self the most because she doesn't listen to herself. Maybe that's you?

We Need To Trust and Follow Our Intuition Instead of Suppress Our Needs

We need to relax, become much more intuitive and become more comfortable with not always having a plan or structure. Yes, it's hard to do if we're control freaks. But it's doable, and it's healthier for us.

Our job is to try and live our lives so that we're true to ourselves, listen to our bodies and minds, don’t judge ourselves for resting, relaxing, having certain thoughts etc. Once we get better at all that, all external distractions become less and less important. We start hearing what the true ME inside of us says because a lot of the noise is eliminated.

What do you do today to listen to yourself?
