340. Chronic Pain is Treated Differently In Finland: A Physical Therapist’s Perspective – with Liis Kukkonen

In today's episode I'm joined by my guest Liis Kukkonen. Liis is a physical therapist who is practicing in Finland, and she also happens to be my best friend — we go back 35 years!

In one of our recent WhatsApp chats I was going to explain Liis what TMS chronic pain is and assuming that she doesn't know much about it. In my experience not very many physical therapists and physicians know about TMS and when they hear about the idea that pain can be caused by stress, trauma and overall heightened activity in the nervous system, they often don't think that this could be real.

Well, I underestimated her. Comes out that she knows very well what TMS is, she sees it in her PT practice, and while she isn't specialized in treating TMS herself, there are physical therapists in her team that are.

So, when a patient comes to her or another physical therapist with pain but the treatments aren't helping, they are looking into STRESS as a possible cause of the pain and refer her out to a TMS specialist or TMS PT.
While TMS is not something that all regular familiar with, it's commonly known, understood and treated appropriately in the medical community.

I think it's fascinating and many countries need to learn from this so that more people get the right kind of help faster.

There's much more in today's episode and I think you'll find it interesting! Tune in!
