I really want to recover! I'm sick and tired of being sick and tired! – have you ever thought this way?
Probably!
Our results and whether we get better or not, depend on our actions. Maybe we're doing something that is not letting us to achieve the goals that we say we have?
Here are some of the most common ways we self-sabotage our hypothalamic amenorrhea, overtraining or an eating disorder recovery…
This is a way we avoid eating more food, although we know that food is medicine. We drink water, black coffee and tea as much as we can so we don't have to feel hunger, but that's not how healing happens. But that's not the way to heal.
I had a client who after several weeks of working together admitted that she's been filling her belly up with multiple bottles of water every time before eating so that she could eat less. Of course she wasn't making any progress, because water didn't give her the healing calories and nutrients she needed.
I used to use this “trick” all the time: I would get up, ignore my hunger and do a super intense and often long workout, without having eaten anything. Some people do okay working out fasted, but here's who shouldn't do it: Those who have an eating disorder or hypothalamic amenorrhea — both of which I had.
Exercise suppresses appetite temporarily, but the body will catch up because it knows that it didn't get enough food.
Do you tell yourself that you can't eat yet because it's not a meal time yet? But if we want to recover from an eating disorder or hypothalamic amenorrhea, we can't let the clock tell us when to eat. If we for some reason have decided that we have to eat at 2pm but we're hungry at 1p, we have to eat at 1pm.
This is a tip that many health magazines give — do something else so you don't feel hunger! But if we have an eating disorder or hypothalamic amenorrhea, this is one of the worst things to do. Food is medicine, and no matter how we distract ourselves, no matter what we do instead, nothing else can give us the nutrients we need to heal.
Stop waiting until you're absolutely famished to eat. Eat when you get the first sign of hunger. If we have an eating disorder or hypothalamic amenorrhea, our bodies thinks that we're starved — and we have to make sure it stops thinking that way. And the way to do it is to eat, eat, eat, as soon as the first hunger sign shows up.
